University of Michigan

Art and Architecture Renovation

The University of Michigan teamed with Christman, Integrated Design Solutions (IDS) to successfully complete this LEED Gold certified project that included a 37,220-square-foot addition and 117,000-square-foot renovation to the 1974 Art and Architecture Building. Rather than just add more space, the expansive wing addition was designed to transform the relationship between students and faculty with a focus on communal and collaborative spaces. The building now boasts new classrooms, an expansive commons area, reconfigured studio spaces, and faculty offices, all to better align with the University’s current teaching mission. The unique addition was partially funded by and named for the late A. Alfred Taubman, an American businessman, investor and philanthropist who studied architecture at U-M.
