Cornerstone University Matthews Auditorium Renovation

Matthews Auditorium was added on to the existing Wood Seminary Building in the 1990s and serves as the primary location for Cornerstone University’s theater productions, conferences and concerts. As the university’s programs continued to grow, the need for a high-end acoustic space and aesthetic upgrade increased.

This project included new acoustic properties for the space and updates to the lighting and audiovisual components. A new orchestra shell was added to increase the acoustic quality of musical performances and a high-end audiovisual system was installed that integrated new theatrical lighting.

New ceiling clouds were put into place to help with acoustics and bring modern architectural elements to the auditorium. In addition, a larger stage was built that features refinished, exposed maple flooring. The overall renovation blended modern architectural elements and finishes that complemented the original space.

Our scope of services included a full planning effort and management of the construction phase. Matthews Auditorium was part of an occupied building, so it was critical that the space be renovated with minimal impact to the facility and its occupants. Careful planning was done to separate the workspace and avoid interruptions to the university’s operations. The team also created a detailed schedule to ensure that all of the work would be completed on time.
