Western Carolina University

Central Energy Plant

This project involved construction of two new buildings for the Western Carolina University (WCU) Energy Production Facility. A new two-story, 17,000 s.f. building houses modern boilers and related equipment, along with a single-story, 1,200 s.f. annex that incorporates the control room, restrooms and offices.

These new structures replaced a portion of the existing steam plant. During construction, temporary utilities and facilities were installed to ensure ongoing operations of the current plant. This was followed by targeted demolition of existing structures to make way for the construction of a new steam generation plant.

Located within a very busy corridor of the University campus, Christman worked closely with WCU facilities staff and campus police/security to maintain regular communication regarding deliveries, necessary traffic disruptions, and any site related activities that might impact the surrounding area. As a result, there were no major disruptions that impacted the campus community.
