Richmond Performing Arts Center
The Altria Theater rehabilitation was a three-phase restoration of nearly the entire structure encompassing the approximately 2,800-seat, ca. 1926 theater. The theater’s Moorish minarets, ornate tiling and detail, and lushly appointed auditorium make it one of Richmond’s most distinctive buildings. Owned by the City of Richmond, this badly needed restoration and renovation fell under a specialized LLC, which allowed the City to utilize historic tax credits to assist with the cost of the work. The Christman/Gilbane team provided pre-construction planning and construction management services to the city for the preservation of this beautiful and historic downtown theater.
The renovations, both interior and exterior, improved the patron experience and provided the resources necessary to present recent and popular show productions and performances. The work included new restrooms, fire alarm controls, façade repairs, emergency lighting, box office improvements, new elevators and concession areas as well as seating restorations and state-of-the-art theater-system upgrades. The patron experience was further improved with new expanded bars and longue areas. This project also required comprehensive abatement and full replacement of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Exterior restoration of structure included restoration to the brick and terracotta as well as roof replacement.
