Caledonia Community Schools
In 2020, Caledonia, Mich., witnessed a transformative wave as voters enthusiastically embraced an $88 million bond proposal, signaling a commitment to elevate the quality of education and infrastructure across the district. This initial endorsement paved the way for further progress, with the community later rallying behind an additional $61 million supplemental bond. This financial boost aimed at fortifying facilities and advancing technology underscores the community’s dedication to fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence and future career preparedness.
The comprehensive bond program prioritizes security enhancements, rejuvenation of aging structures, and the integration of cutting-edge technology to complement the district’s career and technical education initiatives. A sweeping scope encompasses renovations and upgrades to all school buildings, including the maintenance and transportation facility. The ambitious agenda spans site improvements, revamped parent and bus drop-off/pick-up zones, installation of new playground equipment, classroom expansions, roof replacements, HVAC upgrades, and technological advancements, all interwoven with an emphasis on improved security protocols.
Within the total $129 million allocation, a substantial $40 million is earmarked for the construction of the new Dutton Elementary School. This state-of-the-art 60,000 square-foot facility not only provides more open space but also has the capacity to accommodate an additional 150 students. Boasting larger instructional areas and a “barrier-free” playground for children with mobility challenges, the new Dutton Elementary is poised to open in fall 2025, staying on track and within budget.
Beyond educational facilities, a visionary allocation of $6.5 million is dedicated to football stadium renovations, while $3 million is designated for the creation of baseball and soccer fields at the district’s athletic complex, Calplex. This holistic approach transforms the athletic landscape, consolidating athletics, performing arts, and continuing education into a unified community center. Encompassing a swimming pool and multi-use gymnasium, this center is set to become a hub for the Caledonia community, fostering connections across generations and promoting healthy lifestyles and continuous learning.
Notably, Kraft Meadows Intermediate School underwent significant enhancements, with additions to the 5th and 6th-grade wings introducing two new classrooms each. The cafeteria received a substantial upgrade, doubling its square footage, incorporating an outdoor seating area, and featuring a fully modernized servery and kitchen. Accompanying these improvements are additional locker spaces, a new bus loop, a larger resurfaced parking lot, and the installation of new light poles, collectively enhancing the overall functionality and aesthetic appeal of the school facility.
