Colorado Department of General Services
After providing consulting services for the Capitol Life Safety program in the mid-1990s, the team of Christman and GH Phipps was selected to restore the exterior of the dome at the Elijah Myers-designed Colorado State Capitol in Denver.
Christman provided pre-construction services with scaffolding/access system procurement and quality control services. This project included repairing the rusting cast iron façade as well as the deteriorating fenestration, fitting all overhead and decorative cast iron elements with new stainless steel fasteners, repairing copper above the cast iron portion of the dome, repairing cracks and holes. In addition, repairs were done to other deteriorated portions of cast iron including the repair of cracks, holes, and repair of the balustrades. Window restoration was also included. When completed, the dome was entirely refinished and the 23.75 karat gold leaf reapplied, an important design element originally incorporated to honor the historic Gold Rush period.
