Gerald R. Ford International Airport Federal Inspection Station

The Federal Inspection Station that allows flights to arrive directly from locations outside of the United States, and enables the airport to pre-clear international flights. An elevated connector links gates B2 and B4 in Concourse B.

Working in phases, the first phase included the construction of a secure-side baggage handling area and a public-side baggage claim area, as well as the connection to the main terminal. Phase two focused on the construction of the Federal Inspections Services areas, the elevated connector, and new stairs, escalators, and elevators connecting these two phases of the project. This project involved work in both the public and secure portions of the airport, with movement between the two areas only possible at controlled access points with airport-issued secure-area access badges.

With safety and security as the highest priority, the project team worked closely with the airport to follow specific airport access procedures as well as Christman’s safety protocol. As some construction had to take place in public areas, the project team minimized disruptions to airport operations as much as possible, coordinating with all team members on a regular basis and using construction barriers to create safe work areas away from passengers and community members.
