National Park Service Meridian Hill Park High Wall Stabilization

Christman completed the historic concrete stabilization and repair of a 35-foot tall retaining wall, which had displaced several inches, as part of an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract. The wall, a true jewel within the park system of our Nation’s capital area, is located adjacent to a very busy 16th Street, north of the White House. Evaluations of the structure concluded that additional support was needed to avoid further movement and possible collapse of the wall.

Detailed structural and geotechnical investigation performed by the design team provided several repair and strengthening options to the NPS. The selected repair option used tiebacks and mini-piles, stabilizing the wall to preserve public safety, and also to meet the historic structure and landscaping preservation requirements of the National Park Service. The scope of work on the project also included detailed matching of the architectural concrete and aggregate mixtures used on the historic concrete, protecting the historic landscape and protecting visitors and park operations.
