Pentagon Hazardous Material Response Facility

The scope of this project included comprehensive design/build services for the hazardous material response (HAZMAT) facility. The freestanding facility houses emergency response equipment and specialized laboratory and staff for various biological threat events. The two-story structure includes a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) lab, training rooms, building support spaces, administrative offices, shower/locker facilities, refrigeration storage, and equipment/vehicle storage for rapid response activities. The CBRNE Lab was constructed in compliance with the National Institute of Health guidelines for Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) labs, which enable HAZMAT professionals to isolate lethal airborne germs and pathogens.

This facility was designed as LEED Gold certifiable. Energy conservation and efficiency measures included energy management control systems, low-energy lighting, solar shading devices, reflective glazing, a high-albedo roof, solar powered battery backup, and high efficiency HVAC systems.
